My Reading Speech

Kia Ora koutou Ko Hazel tōku ingoa. Hello everyone my name is Hazel and I am here to talk to you about something that some of you might enjoy doing. Reading is one of my favourite things to do, it’s right up in league with sleeping, annoying my brother and watching TV. So in order to help everyone get a better understanding of how helpful books really are I am going to lay down a few points for you, and if you still find reading a waste of time then that’s your opinion.

I know that some of you find reading boring or a waste of time, but it actually helps with a lot of things. I also know that a fraction of you enjoy it almost as much as I do. It is a fact that people who don’t read a decent amount have worse spelling, grammar and writing skills with fewer ideas than those who do. You might not know this, but reading also encourages empathy, the ability to understand the feelings of another person or character in the book and in real life. I have had the experience in multiple books of taking the place of the main character  such as “Saving Francesca” and “The City Of Fallen Angels”. In The City Of Angels I feel like I had a real connection with Clarissa who was the main character because of the vocabulary that Cassandra used in that book. I learnt to use the same vocab in my own writing to give someone else that experience.

A lot of people prefer doing other stuff instead such as watching YouTube or playing games on their chromebooks for hours on end instead of getting their daily dose of literature. The truth is without reading books you will be sorely lacking in more ways than one. Writing is something that books assist in multiple ways, not only does it help with grammar and spelling, reading books is an amazing way to get awesome ideas, from alien invasions to supernatural occurrences. Technology has also given us access to more books from the internet.

As technology has become an important asset in our lives books have now become available on Kindles or e-books that you can download from the internet. With these you can have hundreds of books in one place at a time. You can also buy books there for a cheaper cost. A few downsides is that with Kindles they only have a limited battery life and if you drop them you might lose more than the page you were reading.

That is why I think reading books is something everybody should do. If you were opposed to reading I hope I changed your mind and if not then that’s okay as I said before you all have your own opinions that you are entitled to and that’s fine. I also hope that each of you learned something new today about reading and what advantages come with it. That’s all I have to say for now. Thank you all for listening.

Stop Animal Cruelty Speech

Stop Animal Cruelty

Kia ora people of karoro school, ko Hazel toku ingoua. Today I am going  talk to you about the atrocious problem of animal cruelty and explain animal smuggling. Animal smuggling is when people decide to smuggle native or rare animals to airports or boats to sell them. People think that taking rare animals like the jeweled gecko from their natural habitat just to get money is ok but it is not. If people like yourselves are selling rare animals then what is the hope of their survival?

Smuggling animals can be harmful to the environment because it can do damage to nature. If you take important animals from their habitat then the plants could die. If the plants die and the animals die then mankind dies. For example if all the bees in the world died then all the plants would die and since plants are food all animals would die then all of mankind would die. For every little action there is a massive reaction. People like you can change things around the country starting with one place at a time. Vote for the Meme Team and things will change, or waste it on people that won’t do anything.
As Albert Schweitzer, author of 5 books, once said “ We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty of which we treat animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them it is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our compassion to all living things, humanity will not discover peace.”  Animal smuggling is a form of cruelty, follow in the steps of Albert Schweitzer and stop animal cruelty.

What is the cost of preventing smuggling? The cost of preventing the smuggling of animals cost tens of millions of dollars, but sometimes all that money goes to waste. We have managed to protect white rhinos and we can do it again for whatever animal needs our help. If you are about to smuggle an animal then imagine yourself in a scary small box or a bag not knowing what was happening and then dying slowly and most likely painfully. Then if you have a human soul that alone should be able to stop.
Animal cruelty is one of the worst problems in the world. It needs to be stopped. If we stop animal cruelty then we can save all the animals from unnatural death. If the animals survive we survive.  We can stop other species of animals narrowly missing extinction. If we can double the population of the black rhino in just a few years we can achieve anything within our sights. Eleven species have become extinct in the last ten years because of us that is appalling! You can make a change. vote for the Meme Team and save the animals!.
Success Criteria: we will have met our learning intentions when we can
  • Plan our speech using Coggle
  • Construct texts that show an awareness of purpose and audience through deliberate choice of content, language, and text form.
  • Convey and sustain personal voice where appropriate.
  • Write and film our own version of a “edTalk” to share with our peers.
